Symptoms

Storage pool %2 has drive(s) %3 predicted to exceed end-of-life thresholds within less than 60 days and the system does not have enough free drives to replace them.

The storage pool has Flash drives predicted to reach end-of-life threshold within less than 60 days and the storage system does not have enough drives of this type to replace all drives of this type with end-of-life less than 60 days over the whole system, i.e. counting FAST Cache and all pools having such Flash drives.

Alert Message ID 14:60349 ALRT_POOL_DRIVE_EOL_IN_60_DAYS

Cause

There is both an OE code and drive firmware issue that causes the premature reporting and EOL of drives with the part numbers listed in this KB.

Affected part numbers (TLA):
005052155
005052154
005052379
005052380
005051740
005051739
005052377
005052378

The pool has flash drives of a specific type that are predicted to exceed end-of-life thresholds within 60 days. The storage system does not have enough free drives of the same type to replace them.

Resolution

For the above part numbers on a Unity array, DO NOT replace any drives proactively, as this is a premature failure indicator.
This also includes the drives that have already reached EOL and are currently faulted or disabled.
Dell EMC support can re-enable the drives by clearing the EOL flag with software commands.
Please contact Dell EMC Technical Support or your Authorized Service Representative, and quote this Knowledgebase article ID.

Newer Unity OE as well as drive firmware has been released to address premature wearing of the TLA drives listed above. The new OE code and drive firmware should be applied as soon as possible to prevent any additional premature wear reports. Please note that Unity OE 5.0.1 still will need to be applied to have the Days Remaining recalculated to reflect accurately. So the following Unity OE and drive firmware should be installed:
  • Latest Drive Firmware Package (This issue is fixed since "Unity_Drive_Firmware_Package-V11", so install v11 or later)
  • Unity OE: 5.0.1 or later
If a drive that reaches EOL and/or 0 days is not part of the affected TLA list below, the drive should be replaced using the normal procedure.
For more information about how to safely replace a faulted or EOL drive that is part of a dynamic pool, please refer to KB 000532192

For multiple drive EOL reports for part number other than the ones listed above, and before taking any action, please contact Dell EMC Technical Support or your Authorized Service Representative, and quote this Knowledgebase article ID.

Additional Information

Note it is best practice to have a single free/hot spare drive for each SSD drive type and size. By following best practice the array will take appropriate proactive measures by sparing (PACO) a problem drive over to the free/unbound drive once a drive hits EOL. Once the PACO is complete the original drive will fault, causing a dial home for the drive replacement. At the time of the drive fault the drive can then be replaced (Please refer to KB 000532192 on how to safely replace a drive in a Dynamic Pool). The replaced drive will then be the new hot spare in the system for that drive type. If you do not have a current single free drive it is recommended to contact your account team to obtain one.
