PowerStore: Initial Configuration Wizard (ICW) fails if the network ports do not satisfy the required minimum speeds

Summary: Initial Deployment of PowerStore fails if the data port speeds are not 10 Gb or higher.

Article Content

Symptoms

Example of the error presented during a PowerStore X Initial Configuration Wizard (ICW):

Error Code: 0xE0C010010004
Network Error: Failed creating cluster network, Reason: The speed of network adapter vmnic4 (1000 Mb/s) on the ESXi host xx.xx.xx.xx does not satisfy the minimal requirements (10000 Mb/s). Ensure that the speed is correctly configured on the ethernet switch.

Journal logs (svc_journalctl) example:
Apr 02 22:04:28 xxxxx-A control-path[20401]: [ERROR] [com.emc.bedrock.command.CommandServiceVerticle|vert.x-eventloop-thread-0] [xxxxxxx Received a response to com.emc.cyclone.contexts.networkconfiguration.domain.commands.ConfigureClusterNetworkCommand parent id: xxxxxxx, instance id: , start time: 2021-04-02T22:04:27.549Z The speed of network adapter vmnic4 (1000 Mb/s) on the ESXi host 10.X.XX.XXX does not satisfy the minimal requirements (10000 Mb/s). Ensure that the speed is correctly configured on the ethernet switch.

Cause

The data ports on every node must be connected to minimum 10G ports on the ToR switches.

Resolution

PowerStore did not support 1 Gb ToR connection for data ports in PowerStoreOS Version 1.x.
As of PowerStoreOS 2.0.1, the ICW no longer fails when the link speed is below 10 Gb.

The KB examples are for PowerStore X, but the same is true for PowerStore T.
The warning above allows the ICW to continue, and the cluster creation succeeds with 1 Gb links with PowerStoreOS 2.0.1+.
Attention: Using 1 Gb links is not recommended for anything other than management traffic.

If the ICW fails, a reinitialization is required before another ICW attempt is carried out. See PowerStore: How to reinitialize a PowerStore system to factory state using the svc_factory_reset command
